6 November: Presidential Visit to Antarctica

November 5 at 09h00 local time, the president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, went to Santiago de Chile, from where his counterpart in that country, Sebastián Piñera, to Antarctica to visit the station Pedro Vicente Maldonado, Ecuador, and to the Chilean base Eduardo Frei.

Ecuador's entourage includes Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino and the Ministers of Communication, Fernando Alvarado, and Higher Education and Science Manuel Baldeón.

Ecuador in March 1988 made the first expedition to Antarctica and later established a scientific station Pedro Vicente Maldonado, from where different scientific research.

Ecuador enters the Antarctic Treaty as a contributing member in June 1987 and November 1990 was accepted as a consultative member, marking a new stage in Ecuador's commitments with respect to that continent. In September 1988, Ecuador entered the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research (SCAR), as an associate member and this is part of the main forum that coordinates global efforts to preserve and investigate the Antarctic Continent. In 1992, the country is accepted as a full member of this international organization.

The visit of President of the Republic, Rafael Correa Delgado of Ecuador scientific station Pedro Vicente Maldonado, became the first by a Head of State to the polar region. To commemorate this event Post of Ecuador has prepared a commemorative postmark, the same that will be used during the visit to the stations for the delivery of philatelic souvenirs.

Research Station Pedro Vicente Maldonado (Ecuador)

Pedro Vicente Maldonado Station is an Antarctic research center operated by Ecuador. It is located in Fort Williams Point on Greenwich Island.

The first phase of the station was built during the second II Expedition and the second and third module installed at the Seventh Expedition.

Antarctic Base Eduardo Frei (Chile)

Base Presidente Eduardo Frei Antarctic base is the largest in Chile and one of the largest in all of Antarctica. Located on the Fildes Peninsula, an area devoid of ice in front of Fildes Bay (Maxwell Bay), west of King George Island, South Shetland Islands. At 200 meters is the Bellingshausen Russian base.
